Beauty brand Dove sparked controversy Sunday after releasing an ad that shows a woman of color transforming into a white woman who then transforms into a third woman of color. Mic spoke to Carl Zimring, a professor of social science and cultural studies at Pratt Institute, about the long history of racism in beauty products marketing. “I would hope that what’s happened with Dove leads to systemic ways of really looking at the history and finding ways to avoid these very noxious stereotypes,” Zimring said.
